What is Liver Biopsy?
A liver biopsy aims to provide information about your liver by obtaining a small sample of tissue via a needle through the skin, using ultrasound to guide the needle.
Why perform Liver Biopsy?
Liver biopsies are done to establish the diagnosis of many different liver diseases. It may may help establish the cause of liver dysfunction or assess the degree/stage of liver cirrhosis. It may also help diagnosis cancer that has arisen from, or spread to, the liver.
How does Liver Biopsy work?
Liver biopsies are usually done under conscious sedation. Your interventional radiologist will use local anaesthetic to numb the skin and liver surface, then pass a needle through the skin and into the liver using an ultrasound machine to guide the needle into the right place. Through this needle, multiple samples can be obtained if needed.
